Twitter's 280 Character Tweets Will Be Available For Almost Everyone

The social media giant, Twitter began testing a new 280 character limit some moths ago. Twitter is now rolling the feature out today, for almost everyone.

According to Twitter, don't expect to see streams of massive tweets for now. The number of tweets with an higher-than-average character count was small after the new feature was rolled out. As a matter of fact, only a small percentage (5%) of tweets sent by "testers were 140 characters long".

Quoting Aliza Rosen, Twitter's product manager:
"We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they Tweeted more easily and more often. But importantly, people Tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained."

The new character limit will be available to languages that have problem with "cramming". Cramming in this sense implies languages that have more meaning packed into every character. Japanese, Korean and Chinese languages for instance don't require higher character limit compared to languages like English.
